Official or not

Rust's in-game Official tab against everything else

Official servers are the ones in Rust's in-game Official tab: Facepunch's own and its partners', such as RustSpain. Rust Going Deep keeps that list by hand, by hostname and address. Everything else is a community or modded server.

Right now 116,384 players are spread across 11,754 public Rust servers, with 1,056 in queue and a 24-hour peak of 114,887. That number moves all day: the quietest hour usually has less than half the players of the busiest, and the peak lands in the European evening. Below, the same players split by modded or not, game mode, group size, gather rate, region, and how fresh the wipe is. If you are picking a server to sink a whole wipe into, start with just wiped and check the live player count before you commit.

Strata

How the players split

Every server online is counted once in each breakdown, so each one adds up to the 116,384 players on 11,754 servers.

Modded or not

rates, rules and plugins

Oxide runs on 7,343 servers with 69,465 players, Carbon on 1,894 with 18,060. 2,647 servers with 60,956 players call themselves vanilla.

By game mode

what each server is for

Premium-only servers (290, with 4,325 players) are counted in their mode: premium decides who may join, not how the game plays.

Questions

How many people are playing Rust right now?

The number at the top of the page is every player on a public Rust server, refreshed every five minutes. It changes through the day, with the busiest hour usually holding more than twice the players of the quietest. If you want the same figure with a longer history, the live player count page has it.

Why does this differ from Steam's Rust player count?

Steam counts everyone with Rust open, including menus and loading screens, and players on servers that do not list publicly. This page counts players on public servers only, which is why it can split them by server type. Both numbers are real; they just count different things.

When is Rust busiest?

The European evening is the peak, and the chart by hour of day shows the busiest hour in UTC averaged over the last week. Evening in Australia is late morning in the UK, and evening on the US east coast is after midnight in the UK. If you play outside those hours, the pop you see will usually be lower than the daily peak.

Are more people on modded or vanilla servers?

Modded servers hold more players in total, largely because there are far more of them. The live split is above and changes as servers report. For a closer look, the top modded servers and top vanilla servers pages rank them by current pop.
