Rank is players over the last seven days. A big server showing offline while the rest are up is that server restarting or wiping, not Rust being down.

The verdict, from our own reading

We query the full public server list every five minutes and add up the servers that answer. That number is the basis for the call at the top of this page. We do not ask Steam or Facepunch whether Rust is down. We read the list ourselves and compare the total to what is normal for 2026 at this hour.

  • Above 85% of the usual count: the servers are up, and a quiet lull is the explanation for any dip.
  • Between half and 85%: some servers are missing or restarting, but the network as a whole is working.
  • Below half: that is an outage, not a busy hour.

What we compare against

Rust has a daily rhythm. The count climbs through the European evening, peaks around 19:00 to 22:00 UTC, and falls through the small hours. A Tuesday at 04:00 UTC is nothing like a Friday at 20:00 UTC. We keep 48 hours of readings and compare the current total to the same hour yesterday and the day before, so a low number at 05:00 does not get called a crash.

The 48-hour chart

Below the verdict, the chart plots total online players against time for the last two days. Flat and high means the network is healthy. A sudden cliff that stays down for more than one reading is the pattern of a real outage. A short dip that recovers within ten minutes is usually a force wipe restart, not a failure.

Are the big servers up?

The largest servers by pop are listed under the chart. These are the ones that go first when something is wrong, and they carry most of the players. If the top few are answering normally, Rust is up for almost everyone. Their numbers feed the same total that produces the verdict, so there is no separate calculation.

When your browser is empty but ours is not

If this page says Rust servers are up and your in-game list shows nothing, the problem is between you and Steam, not in the Rust server network. Work down this list:

  1. Restart Steam, then Rust. The in-game browser is fed by Steam, and a stale session shows an empty list.
  2. Check your filters. A region or tag you set weeks ago can hide every server you want.
  3. Look at Steam's own status. When Steam's list is out, every game's browser empties, and our total usually drops too.
  4. On force wipe day, update Rust before you try again. Servers restart one at a time and the old build cannot see them.
  5. Turn off any VPN and try again. A strict firewall or a work network can block the UDP traffic the browser needs.

If one particular server is missing, it is that server wiping, restarting or down. Its page here at /servers/ip:port shows when we last saw it, and our just wiped list shows servers that have come back up in the last few hours.

If you are choosing a server rather than checking Rust

A status page is not much use when you are looking for somewhere to spend a wipe. For that, the live server list filters by pop, map, region and mode. Pop is the first thing to check, then the wipe schedule, then the tick rate if the server is modded. A server with 200 players at 21:00 UTC and 20 at 09:00 UTC is normal, not broken.

Questions

Are Rust servers down right now?

The verdict at the top of this page is the answer, and it is live. We read the full public server list every five minutes and compare the total to the same hour on previous days. Above 85% of that baseline, Rust is up. Below half, it is an outage.

My game shows no servers but this page says they are up

The problem is then on your side or Steam's. Restart Steam, clear any region or tag filters in the server browser, and check whether Steam itself is down. On force wipe day you also need to update Rust before the new build can see the restarted servers. A VPN or a strict firewall can block the UDP traffic the browser uses, so try with those off.

How do you know whether Rust is down?

We do not rely on a status page from Steam or Facepunch. We read the server list directly every five minutes and track the total over 48 hours, so we can tell a normal quiet hour from a real drop. If a reading is more than 25 minutes old, the page says so rather than guess.
